AKA Wraiths of Roanoke

In this tale based on the lost North Carolina colony of Roanoke Island the colonists are attacked by three wraiths. The acting governor tries to understand what is happening while the people are being killed off. Finally piecing together half remembered Norse legends and local Native American tales he realizes these are the spirits of 3 viking witches, trapped on the island with the colonists. Can they find a way to end the siege and survive the winter when even the forest is controlled by the wraiths?

This film wasn’t bad other than the special effects, the acting was o.k. and the Indians looked cool more like aborigines than native Americans. The wraiths of the viking witches where almost cool except that creepy green light that surrounded them it reminded me of the special effects in the 80’s classic Walt Disney film Mr. Boogedy. Adrian Paul played an Englishman who just so happen spoke and read the Norse language of the vikings. That was funny because he also knew the myth of the viking witches.

The story evolves around one of America’s oldest unsolved mysteries, The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island where the first American child was born. You can read more about the true story here Roanoke Colony. The film puts a more malevolent twist to the truth but is backed by true events. The problem with it is you have a story like this and very low budget, it should of been a lot better, they had the right idea they just failed to execute it.

Del Toro BUSY BUSY BUSY AT Universal

Variety has published an article talking about director Guillermo del Toro’s schedule, which is now booked through 2017. Here are several clips:

Universal — which has a three-year first-look deal with the helmer inked in June ‘07 — and del Toro are making a long-term commitment by setting up four directing projects, including remakes of “Frankenstein,” “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Slaughterhouse-Five.”

The fourth project is an adaptation of “Drood,” a Dan Simmons novel acquired by U that will be published in February by Little, Brown.

Of course, del Toro’s first priority is New Line and MGM’s “The Hobbit,” to which he has committed the next five years. He has begun writing “Hobbit” with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, collaborating via video conferencing and trips to New Zealand every three weeks.

While it’s difficult, if not impossible, to plan projects five years into the future, at this point U execs think “Drood” is the most likely to be del Toro’s first post-”Hobbit” directing vehicle.

In addition to the four pics, the studio still has its sights set on del Toro’s pet project, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness.”

Farewell to the Shane Train

During an interview for his new action bonanza Bangkok Dangerous, Oscar-winner and perennial strange-on-screen-hairdo connoisseur Nicolas Cage let slip about a few of his upcoming comic book films.

First up, he discussed a sequel to last year’s Columbia Pictures and Marvel release, Ghost Rider.

Cage: Yes, actually, had a nice meeting with the studio about 3-months ago, and we talked about going international with that character. Taking him into Europe, having him go on a motorcycle tour through Europe, and he’s connected with the church, if you can believe that. So it sort of has elements to it that are very much in the zeitgeist, with “The Da Vinci Code” and things like that.

Cage also discussed working with Matthew Vaughn (Stardust) on the adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic series Kick-Ass, which is about a kid who always wanted to be a superhero.

Cage: As I continue working in film I want to try to keep it as organic and honest as possible, and I am that kid. I’m the kid that would dress up like a superhero, sneak out of the house at 10 o’clock at night, jump around pretending I was fighting crime. It was a good match because it’s definitely sincere. I play a guy named Damon, the father of Mindy who is “Hit Girl” and I’m “Big Daddy,” and I’m training my daughter to be a superhero.

The Shield-The Final Act: Episode 1

So I’m anxious to talk about the first episode of my favorite dirty cop show The Shield. The shit really hits the fan and picks up exactly where it left off last season. Mackey’s employment status is still pending, but he’s still out there with the force doing what he does. After confronting Shane Mandrel about kidnapping his wife and kid, he learns that Shane did it to protect them from the Armenian mob. Vic and Ronnie go after the guy that Shane shot in his ex-wifes house, needless to say that guy didn’t make it.

This episode was packed with excitement, as Vic and Shane try to test the waters between them and end up starting a rumor that could not only save Vic’s family from the Armenians but also start a gang war and eliminate all of there ties to the money train.

I was really impressed even though it was a highly anticipated episode I was not disappointed. It started with a the pretty gory aftermath of an Armenian hit. When I say gory I mean it, there was a 20 to 30 foot trail of blood in the middle of the street that lead to a mangled body. A body in which after it was ran down by a car, the driver then hacked off its foot.

Billing returned from his leave of absence/workers comp. lawsuit. Dutch and Claudette, are still running the barn and Aceveda hasn’t changed a bit. The story has an awesome start and the previews for next week look great. This time Ronnie gets a push, and becomes a more important role in the end game. Each on going character is in the middle of the shit and are all building up for the worst.

Music Review: Motorhead - Motorizer (2008)

Motorhead has been around doing what they do for a very long time. Their style and sound are very distinct from any other band, I give that to Lemmy’s very unique vocals. There is something about a pissed off guy who sounds like he has throat cancer that sounds very cool when backed by very heavy and fast hard hitting music such as Motorhead. Other than the vocals the band has a very nice guitar sound and are definitely into solos.

“Motorizer” is a very treble heavy album I had to crank the bass up a bit for it to hit right, I blame that on the producer. Other than that the album is really fast and nothing has changed much in the Motorhead world. I think I like this band just because it is Motorhead, you can’t like metal and not like Motothead I think that is a rule.

As for the songs they all sound the same, much like any other Motorhead album I’ve ever heard, that is not such a bad thing because the album is barely over a half an hour and its loud and heavy. Hey it works for AC/DC as well, so I don’t complain. A couple tracks stick out like “When The Eagle Screams” and “One Short Life” but they barely stand out from the rest. My favorite song is “English Rose” because it kicks ass and has a nice groove.

Actually I’m giving this album 3 beers because I’m terrified of Lemmy and I am afraid that if I didn’t like the album he would show up at my house on a really loud motor cycle and kick my ass. Just kidding Motorhead fans, its a good album if your fan, probably won’t gain any new listeners but its nice to know that these guys are still around.

Music Review: Iced Earth- The Crucible of Man (2008)

I’m not going to lie, Iced Earth is an acquired taste and if your not already an Iced Earth fan I don’t think that this album will change your mind. But I will say it has been the bands best release in a long time. I haven’t loved anything with this line up since, “Something Wicked This Way Comes” and “A Tribute to The Gods” . I liked The Ripper on “The Glorious Burden” but come on its The Ripper, other than his vocals I thought that album was pretty cheesy. I’m not a huge fan of themed albums though, unless your King Diamond of coarse. I haven’t kept up with them lately but decided to get this album.

I do like Iced Earth a lot though for various reasons, like Jon Schaffer being a bad ass guitarist and the fact that they are an American metal band with the same impact as European based groups. The best way to describe the band is that if “Testament” and “Iron Maiden” got married and had a kid, that kid started a band influenced by its parents style it would be Iced Earth. I also like the religious over tones and their cover art as well.

Matt Barlow returns again for this disc and he sounds great, better than ever even. He has a great vocal style and can sing his ass off that really shows on this album. I love tracks “I Walk Alone” and “Crucify The King”. you can really feel the chemistry of the band again like it was on “Something Wicked This Way Comes”. Barlow hits the high vocals at times as well, I love that shit.In whole the album is good, a few tracks really stand out, some sound the same, but you get that when you deal with a band such as Iced Earth or Iron Maiden, etc. It comes with the territory.

The vocals are great and the guitar work is very awesome, if your a long going Iced Earth fan you’ll love this album, it might pick up a few new fans but they stay true to their style and sound and they pounded out a solid album. Check it out then come back here and tell me what you thought.

Movie Review: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)

The four Pevensie children return to Narnia, only to discover that hundreds of years have passed since they ruled there, and the evil King Miraz has taken charge. With the help of a heroic mouse called Reepicheep, and the exiled heir to the throne, Prince Caspian, they set out to overthrow the King, once again with Aslan’s help.

I was kind of lost going into this and that’s not good considering that I watched “The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe” right before watching its sequel. It took me a minute to catch on to the story, what with all the humans in Narnia. But once it got going I picked it right up. I want to touch on a few things that bothered me about this film first I hated the mouse I thought that he was cheesy and frankly stupid, I’m sure he was there for comic relief but I would of picked a more serious character than a mouse.

Next I think that evil King Miraz was trying to hard to be Lionidas from 300, at least his appearance, he was no Lionidas. There weren’t enough scenes with the lion either, I really liked that character and hoped to see more of him. I did dig a lot of the other characters though, like the minotaurs and the dwarfs they were really cool.

I also really liked the battle scenes and the special effects, Walt Disney does a great job with fantasy films and never disappoints in that aspect. I really liked the viking looking water dude that comes closer to the end of the film, watch for that it is one of the highlights for me. The four kids are great actors/actresses and I think they have a bright future. But I don’t understand why they weren’t older when they returned to Narnia like when they left the first film. Other than a few nit picks of mine the film was good, I would of liked to see a few of the older characters return from the first film, but Oh well.

I don’t think this was better than “The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe” at all, I’d give it a nice runner up though. As far as the battles and effects it ruled the story could of filled a few loop holes better for my taste. I’d say the film was nothing more than average.

Movie Review: The Life Before Her Eyes (2008)

Imaginative, impetuous and wild Diana (Evan Rachel Wood) can’t wait for her adult life to begin. Whiling away the final days of high school in the lush springtime, Diana tests her limits with sex and drugs, even having an abortion at one point, as her more conservative friend Maureen (Eva Amurri) watches with concern. But Diana’s aura of invincibility is shattered when a senseless act of violence erupts at school, forever changing the lives of the two best friends.

Fifteen years later, a grown Diana (Uma Thurman) is still trying to come to terms with the traumatic events of that fateful day. On the surface, the adult Diana has made a picture perfect life for herself. She’s still living in the sleepy Connecticut suburb she grew up in with her husband Paul, a professor at the local college. Her beautiful young daughter, Emma, is smart and creative, and possesses a fiercely independent streak reminiscent of her mother. But all is not well—as the anniversary of her adolescent trauma approaches, the darkness that Diana has tried to escape closes in. Meanwhile, her husband has become increasingly absent, her daughter has taken to hiding from teachers, and worst of all, Diana’s own grip on reality is starting to falter. From the Official Site

This was a bit of an up and down ride for me. The trailer made it look like a poor man’s “Crash”, which intrigued me enough to check it out and gave me a positive outlook on the film. But then the first 45 minutes happened, and I found myself, quite simply, bored. I liked the concept a lot, because up to this point no one has ever made a film about the effects of a school shooting on the victims. And the back and forth style they used to show Diana pre-shooting and 15 years after the fact was handled well. Unfortunately, other than the school shooting her story is typical small town teenage angst bullshit that is completely uninteresting. I found myself hitting the display button on my DVD remote a few times, waiting to be put out of my misery.

It’s fortunate then that the last half hour or so is absolutely fantastic, although I got the feeling that I should have been more prepared for the way things play out. After a mind numbing 45+ minutes, the fact that I was actually interested in what was going to happen was enough for me. I wasn’t expecting the movie to flick a switch and all of sudden be smart and entertaining.

Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood both hit home runs, but unfortunately their pitching sucked until the late innings. That is the best analogy I can come up with to describe what I felt when all was said and done. It’s a straight up drama, with little in the way of action, humor, or even suspense (the shooting scenes being a slight exception, but not much). It may be worth a rental if it sounds like your thing.

Movie Review: Death to Smoochy (2002)

This all-star cast will go down in my book as one of the funniest, best made movies of all times! Directed by Danny DeVito, this film takes the children’s television world to a rated R level. Rainbow Randolph (Robin Williams), the teenybopper idol de jour, has the nation’s childrens industry locked, marketing himself on everything from cereal to dolls to ice shows. His popularity craze and rising bank roll turns the actor greedy, thus making him turn to accepting bribes from parents who want their children to be stars. After accepting a bribe from a pair of FBI agents, Rainbow gets busted and fired and in turn loses all of his perks, money, and respect. Executives of the network, Kidnet, the host of Randolph’s show, Nora Wells (Catherine Keener) and Frank Stokes (John Stewart) must find a new wholesome character to fill his shoes. After reviewing less than promising options, they settle on Smoochy the Rhino, Sheldon Mopes (Ed Norton), a health food eating, tree hugging, neo-hippie who’s recent gigs include singing drug jingles in methadone clinics. Mopes, however, refuses to play by Kidnet’s rules, insisting that Smoochy should not be a commercialized property, but an educational, ethical program. Meanwhile, Sheldon’s sudden success puts Rainbow over the deep end, as he sets out to sabotage the innocuous image of Smoochy.

Supporting the movie were some also wise casting choices; Harvey Fierstein as the leader of a mafia-like corrupt charity organization, DeVito himself as Smoochy’s slimy agent and Vincent Schiavelli as a heroine addicted assassin.

The movie is filled with hundred of one liners, funny jingles (”But my step dad’s not mean, he’s just adjusting”), and fantastic backgrounds full of vibrant colors and shapes. It also features a group of midgets, excuse me, little people, which always makes a movie just a little more funny. (Oh wait, I already mentioned DeVito).

“You better grow eyes in the back of your head, you horned piece of shit, because I’m not gonna sleep until worms are crawling up your foam-rubber ass! I’m goin’ on safari motherfucker! SAH-FAR-I!”

Trick R Treat Update

FANGORIA will host a free screening of the anthology horror flick TRICK ’R TREAT at New York City’s Two Boots Pioneer Theater on Monday, October 13 at 7 p.m., marking the film’s East Coast premiere and a rare opportunity to see this eagerly awaited movie on the big screen. The film’s writer/director, Michael (X-MEN 2) Doughtery, will introduce the film and take part in a Q&A. Band Interview: Ventana

Developed out Cleveland, Ohio in January of 2004, Ventana is coming out of the trenches and blowing our mind with their style of music. Ventana being Spanish for window, it is said it represents a time where we see not only the past, but also a slight reflection of our future in the dusty bloodstained glass.

Winning the “2006 Cleveland Scene Music Award” for the best industrial Goth band, to the mentions, write-ups and interviews in numerous local and national publications, they are making their mark on more than just the “industrial metal” genre… but music as a whole.
Here is a little bit of info to better understand the band and what they are trying to do:
“Our efforts exists for no other reason than to bring back the type of music that we love with the tones and frequencies of the music that we are inspired by today; the music of violence, the music of honesty, the music of brutal sincerity that allowed to follow our hearts into the whirlpool that is “the industry”. We have been waiting in the shadows to release what we consider to be a demon that reflects a demon within our own souls and this primal sound being channeled through us. Our fans have kept the fires burning beneath our streets for so long that we have overcome adversity and continue to put our efforts into a sound that we feel represents what we want and what our fans demand. Villainous undertones and murderous inclinations resound throughout our composition. The lives of alienation and degradation that have brought us here shall now lead us. So what words describe our project and us? The voice belongs to the machinery of hate that drives us. To understand Ventana is to experience the direct connection we are establishing between our nature and the world we have come to reject. As for words to describe the beat of the dying sound, Just listen…..”
With their debut album “American Survival Guide Vol. 1” said to be out Halloween of ‘08, that doesn’t stop them from doing what they dream to do. They’ve shared the stage with Psyclon Nine and opened plenty of shows for Mushroomhead, of course.
I was able to have the band do our band questionnaire so that we and their fans may be able to get to know them a little bit more personally:

THE BAR: What is the origin of the band name?

Rick: Ventana is spanish for the word window.. a group of us were involved with many other projects and bands and upon grouping came up as a clever way to describe our “window” of opportunity to make a band that was geared towards what we wanted to say in music.

Dan: What he said, it was gonna be Lil Dan’s Wang chung dance dance emo Killing machine. But was scrapped last min due to legal complications.

THE BAR: Who would you list as the bands biggest influences?

Rick: faith no more and nine inch nails are my biggest two. and most music that came out of the mid-90’s..dirty, angry, and honest

Matt: For myself personally I would credit Mike Patton, Trent Reznor, Burton Bell, Oderus Urungus, and the trio of vocalists in KMFDM.

THE BAR: What is your favorite song live?

THE BAR: If you could do a show with anyone, who would it be and why?

Matt: Tough choice. There are so many bands and artists that I would be honored to share a stage with. Above all, I would have to pick NIN. Trent was a pioneer in making industrial music what it is today. It would be interesting to show an audience in one show how art is admired and then applied in new ways. VentanA definitely sounds the way it does because of bands like NIN. It would be cool to see it come full circle.

Dan: I would love to be the opening act for a White Zombie and Faith No More reunion show. Yea Rob if you read this get on it!!!

THE BAR: At this point what has been your favorite show you’ve played?

Rick: Halloween shows opening up for Mushroomhead here in Cleveland, Ohio

Dan: We played at a place called the Sky bar for an industrial Goth night. Ventana and Psyclon Nine played the show, that’s where the relationship Between Rick and myself with Psyclon nine.

THE BAR: What do you want the audience to take home after

Rick: enlightenment, motivation to change things that may be shitty in their everyday life

Matt: A hope that we can still survive through these apocalyptic times. A motivation to come together, to fight back, and to take control before it’s too late. Musically, a sound and experience like they have never heard or seen before. A breath of fresh air.

THE BAR: What have been the biggest complications you’ve run into since becoming a band?

Rick: keeping members involved..haha, taken awhile to find hard working “non- rock star attitude” people that really want to work and have something to say.

Matt: Distance has been an issue, but has not prevented progress.

Dan: The constant rotation of guitar players. Is it really that hard to commit and wanna be in a band and have fun?
