Movie Review: Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)

Starring: Peter Cushing, Veronica Carlson, Freddie Jones & Thorley Walters

Director: Terence Fisher

Writer(s): Bert Batt & Anthony Nelson Keys

Studio: Hammer Horror

Rating: R

Official Bar Score:

Baron Frankenstein is once again working with illegal medical experiments. Together with a young doctor, Karl and his fiancée Anna that he blackmailed into assisting him by threatening to turn the young doctor in for stealing cocaine from the asylum where he works. Together they kidnap the mentally sick Dr. Brandt, to perform a brain transplantation and gain a successful formula for an evil experiment.

Its funny how the times have changed, in 1969 organ transplants were abominations, not medical miracles now they are done every day. What shocked the world during Hammer’s hay day is very common these days and I think that the mad scientist Doctor Frankenstein wouldn’t be very crazy in this day and age, except the illegal practice of medicine and of coarse murdering people for their body parts is a little insane but he’s still a genius. This scared people back then because people are afraid of what they do not understand.

I loved this film as I watched it for the first time last night, Frankenstein is getting better as a scientist and it really shows, he’s went from stitching up the bodies of dead men to performing a very intricate brain transplant that’s got to be something to be proud of. What I liked the most about Baron Frankenstein was the fact that he was a super ass hole. He was devious as shit and very rude, he forced this couple to do his every bidding as he raped the young hottie when he pleased and punked her lover. He had them them so afraid that they would do ANYTHING.

I like Peter Cushing a lot, he’s been in a lot of films I love, I’ve seen him play a few different personalities but he is his best as Baron Frankenstein the sadistic scientist that is afraid to make a medical break through, even though it would damn his soul. Veronica Carlson is a total babe who looked very sexy in her nightie, if I was a crazy doctor I’d want to rape her too.

Bottom line is if you don’t like hammer films than you’re probably not going to like this. I being a long time fan loved it.

TRIVIA
* The fifth installment in Hammer Films’ Frankenstein series.

* The controversial rape scene was added at the last minute, after shooting was nearly complete, because Hammer studio head Sir James Carreras thought the film lacked “sex”.

* The characters of Insp. Frisch (Thorley Walters) and the Police Doctor were added to the script at a late stage.

* Peter Cushing deplored the inclusion of the rape scene and even apologized to his co-star Veronica Carlson.

  1. Good screenshots. I want to see this. I’m not sure about Frankenstein’s monster having a pistol though.

  2. Sounds pretty cool, kind of inspired me to sit back and check out some old horror flicks tonight

  3. Yeah I’ve been on a hammer kick as of late, I watched one called the Witches last nite it was o.k. but predictable I’ll probably review it.
