Seth Rogan and Why “The Dark Knight” Won’t Catch “Titanic”

1. Pineapple Express
2. The Dark Knight
3. The Mummy 3
4. Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2
5. Step Brothers

That is my prediction for this week’s box office. I am well aware that I suck at predictions because for the most part, I want to believe that the movies I want to see are gonna be the number one movie in America. But I have reasons for believing “Pineapple Express” dethrones Heath Ledger’s overrated swan song. Some things to consider before you Dark Knight fanboys hop off Heath’s dick for a minute to talk shit:

1. “The Dark Knight” is losing almost 50% a weekend. When you pull gigantic numbers, even the remaining 50% is still going to be big.

2. If that trend holds up this weekend, it pulls just over $20 million, bringing it back to Earth and having to compete with a whole bunch of other shit, namely the Seth Rogan vehicle “Pineapple Express”.

I am an unabashed Apatow/Rogan fanboy, so your natural inclination would be to write off me invoking the “Rogan Factor” as pointless rambling. But all one has to do is glance at Seth Rogan’s resume and one will realize that the man has a knack for being in lucrative movies. Check it:

1. 40 Year Old Virgin
2. Shrek the Third
3. Knocked Up
4. Superbad
5. Horton Hears a Who
6. Kung Fu Panda

Those are all number one’s except “Knocked Up”, which still ended up taking in $148.8 million domestically. And “Superbad” is the highest grossing high-school comedy of all time, despite opening in less than 3,000 theaters during the summer movie season AND being rated R.

So if the trends hold up, “The Dark Knight” pulls just over $20 million and gives up the top spot to “Pineapple Express”. It’s not a stretch. It’s a probability. Much to the dismay of the Heath Ledger Posthumous Fan Club (motto: “I’ve liked Heath Ledger since ‘Ten Things I Hate About You’”).

This brings me to a popular prediction that just defies all common sense: that “The Dark Knight” is going to catch “Titanic”’s $600 million domestic mark.

Regardless of whether or not I am right about “Pineapple Express” derailing “The Dark Knight”, it’s all downhill from here on out for Batman and Co. I am of the opinion that the audience is rapidly dwindling and is either heading back to school, already seen it (possibly multiple times), or has their trusty bootleg on repeat in the DVD player. With the box office numbers decreasing by almost half every weekend, there is no way it’s going to be in theaters long enough to make $200 million more. $200 million dollars is a ridiculous showing at the box office for a movie period! Do you REALLY think a comic book movie with an audience moving on to other things is going to make a 8 figures a week for 4 more months? Sorry, not gonna happen.

“Titanic” had advantages that “The Dark Knight” doesn’t have, like being a winter release and having no legitimate box office competition. With “Pineapple Express” and “Sisterhood 2″ dropping on Wednesday, all of a sudden the weekend is full of choices. My guess is that people go with one of the new kids on the block, and all this bullshit “all time record breaking” talk ceases. I defy you to give me a reason I should believe otherwise.

  1. you don’t need to believe- just accept.

  2. Pinapple is getting bad reviews fan boy, that could hold off other people. Don’t rely on pot heads, they don’t have any money and will probably just try to watch the bootleg.

Titanic had woman and couples being dragged to that shit more than once.

It also had a couple of gay guys i know go to it a couple times.

  3. The last record Dark Knight will break is the Shrek record (think it’s two that has the record) but it won’t touch Titanic’s and that’s just the cold hard facts.

I too think Pineapple has got the #1 spot, for the record I’ve read nothing but good things about Pineapple but that aside what actual critic is gonna tote a stoner quasi action flick? Won’t be the first time Apatow and company had a bad review that stop the diehards from seeing the film.

Besides let’s say the drop isn’t as big next week and Dark Knight still manages to pull in another 30 million, a more than respectable number but even Step Brothers made that it’s opening weekend and just like Dave more people than not are pretty fed up with Ferrell and co.

Point being if a movie starring a comedic actor who is starting to fall out of favor with some (though me, Winny and Wendell still love the guy) can pull those numbers imagine what kind of numbers a guy who is at his peak is gonna pull.

I’m not calling for record numbers for Pineapple Express, but it doesn’t have to pull those kind of numbers to beat Batman at this point.

  4. Whatever Dave, Titanic was good. So yeah, I saw it twice. Once with you if I recall correctly.

But I do agree with you that Titanic had strength in numbers with the female audience. Something the Dark Knight most certainly does not have.

Come on Black, you wanted to talk shit about Box Office numbers and all you got is “you don’t need to believe- just accept.”?

  5. The short hand of what you’re trying to say Winston sounds like “you’re in denial!” As I’ve mentioned before, the pineapple express is targeted at a niche market. Its a stoner movie, a cinematic theme which has historically failed to succeed in the box office (with the biggest exception in my opinion being Dazed and Confused.) Such number #1 films as Shrek 3, Horton Hears a Who, and Kungfu Panda are animated, family-fun films which ticket sales consisted of not just couples going to a date movie but the average 1-2 child american family hourding the box office every weekend. Surely the same white-collared parents and thier cartoon loving children will not be lining up to fill the seats for The PA. Superbad was a rarity in its achievement of success despite it theme. (I personlly loved that movie but lets face it they normally dont do that well in the box office.) So Winston I think this may be for you the sheer excitement of standing the opposition of Batman and contributing your part of the dismantling of the well deserved hype machine that is the fan boys positive word of mouth as opposed to a logical prediction as to what The Dark Knight may still accomplish. Keep in mind you thought The Mummy was going to dethrone this flick and on its opening weekend it was still a million dollars shy of touching Batman which was already had a 3 weeks investment in its audience. The film hasn’t slowed down enough yet to not be able to smut out Brenden Frasiers flame and I think it still has a 2nd and 3rd wind left in its sails. I will give you this however, Titatic set a box office record of ticket sales at a time when movie tickets were about 50% less than they cost now so mathematically even if The Dark Knight hits the same amount of money its still not as many seats filled as Titanic had because the tickets cost more and add up quicker now a days but we will have to wait and see what happens. I believe that if The Dark Knight had not done so well and it wasn’t marketed/hyped nearly as much your opinion as it stands would be different. In closing, it’s ok to like a movie that the magortiy of everyone else likes my friend. There is no denying the magic of what this film has done and has yet to still do.

  6. Hahaha allow me to straight own every argument you just made:

    1) Pineapple Express being a “niche” movie: It’s not just a stoner movie, it’s an action film.

    2) Stoner movies not performing well at the box office: Yes, you are right about that. BUT stoner movies are usually made on a VERY modest budget and turn profits.

    3) “Superbad” was a rarity in it’s success: I’m sorry, but that is just total bullshit. Judd Apatow was absolutely on fire at the box office until “Walk Hard” and “Drillbit Taylor” flopped, and “Walk Hard” has caught on a bit on DVD. For god’s sake last summer “Knocked Up” and “Superbad” made 270 million dollars combined, and this summer “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Step Brothers” have made a combined 125 million so far. You can even stretch it and throw in “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan” (which Apatow wrote) and tack on another 100 million. “Superbad” was the rule, not the exception. And it pulled it’s numbers on less than 3000 screens proving that these guys have a loyal and BIG fanbase.

    4) Yes, I was indeed wrong about the Mummy taking the number one spot (so were some other respected prognosticators. click here and here if you need proof). Yes, The Dark Knight beat it by only a million dollars on a weekend where it lost 50 percent of it’s take (for the third weekend in a row). No, there was nothing else out to challange it. BUT! Yes, The Mummy won the worldwide take. Yes, this week The Dark Knight has to compete for ticket sales with Pineapple Express, The Mummy, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2, and Step Brothers. That’s four choices for every fucking market that has been shoveling dough into the most overrated movie of all time. Last weekend they had two. Trust me, the women are not going to sit through Dark Knight again. In fact, they will probably force the men to take them to Sisterhood 2. Whatever the case may be, Dark Knight is going to have yet another steep drop in ticket sales.

    4) Give me a break man, I love hollywood movies. I have been screaming “Iron Man” at the top of my lungs since I saw it, and even more so now that I have seen the “other” big comic book movie. “Iron Man” AND “Hancock” were both better than “The Dark Knight”. But those weren’t popular movies I guess, they only made 532 million dollars domestically. Yeah I fucking hate mainstream movies. “Pineapple Express” is underground as fuck, that’s why I’m hyping it up. Please…

    5) There is no denying that “The Dark Knight” has performed exceptionally well. But like you said the ticket prices are higher, meaning less people have seen it than “Titanic”, and it STILL won’t fucking touch “Titanic” if the trends hold up.

    6) I used the cartoon movies to prove a point: SETH ROGAN MOVIES MAKE MONEY.

    7) The overblown postive word of mouth killed it for those of us that waited the crowds out, and the negative word of mouth is starting which will stunt things a bit. Hell, there was an article on the front page of Yahoo talking shit about Christian Bale’s Batman voice. I’m not the only one that thinks the hype machine needs to calm the fuck down.

    8) This isn’t a rebuttal to anything you said, but something I just thought of. All these new movies are stealing screens from “The Dark Knight”. Less screens = less money.

  7. Ok the collective total of the movies formentioned above is a staggering 495 million! Thats damn impressive yet still in comparison it took 4-5 movies to hit this number where as Batman: Dark Knight alone is just under 4 million at around 393.75 million so you see how the comparison is void. We cant fairly put a series of movies up against one or else we could delve into the complete Batman film saga. This isnt a test of popularity, success, and might between directors (Christopher Nolan and Seth Rogan), its between film status and marketability.

Niche market? Still I say yes indeed! Don’t get me wrong I can’t wait to see The PA but saying its an action movie as well? I’m sure it will be somewhere along the lines of Lucky Number Sleven in that regard. (Excellent flick!) Batman is catching some flack in the media as anything good always does. I agree w/ the yahoo headlines of Bail needing a cough drop as Batman in the movie. Hell, I agreed w/ that when Wendell said long before I seen it on yahoo. Every movie has its flaws. Halloween is my favorite movie ever and it has its flaws but this doesnt mean its not still a cinematic wonder!

I commend Superbad in its achievement and success especially w/ the limited amount of screens it played on but again…..it is my friend the exception. Right now Seth Rogan is peaking in his popularity amongst the younger advent movie going demograph but the longevitiy of this is still to be unknown. (I.E. Will Ferrell, we see his numbers decline unfortunately as of late where they once soared consistently.) Point being, Batman has proven more than just longevity, it has a legacy. Batman is an iconic media giant headlining anything from comic books to films. This is Dark Knight’s secret weapon, A VAST FAN BASE! Young and old, new and tenured alike, the fans love this movie for the most part and it has been buzzing since its debut.

To touch over on The Mummy comparison again. You so eagerly write “The Dark Knight beat it by only a million dollars on a weekend where it lost 50 percent of it’s take (for the third weekend in a row)” The answer to that arguement is in your words alone. Lets take a look. For the third weekend in a row at losing 50% profit/weekend at a total loss of profit at 150% when The Mummy debuted it still put it out by a solid million. So had The Mummy went head to head w/ Batman opening Weekend it would’ve got buried 6 feet under in competition. The Mummy is a horribe example in this respect as it didn’t stand a chance this past weekend and it would’ve looked even worse had they opened the very same weekend.

As far as thinking the hype machine should calm down? This is a numbers battle not opinion and it seems as though there are still alot of people out there buying tickets for this movie that think other wise thus leaving this out of our hands. I mean again, despite it’s 50% profit decrese per week it still shutting out debut movies.

…..Sisterhood of the Traveling pants example…..(I could be completely wrong here but I doubt it) is not a threat to the Batman regime. PA will do well undoubtedly well but we shall see if the hype behind it serves to be fruitful or serves to be merely…..hype this coming weekend. The box office is a tough market now a days w/ rising ticket prices, gas expense to get to and from (fucking ridiculous alone), and consessions. Not to mention the little to no window between theatrical release and pay per view/DVD availabilty and the thouands of illegal download sites at our fingertips. This being said any movie to accomplish what The Dark Knight has accomplished thus far is well deserving of any and all praise it gets. Personally Heath Ledger and Co. may be dissapointing to some and Oscar worthy to others but either way there is not denying the numbers!

  8. WOW YOU ASS MUNCHERS SAW TITANIC (WICH SHA;NETRAIN MISSPELLED)!!! BUNCH OF COCKSUCKING FAGS! LEO CALLED HE WANTS YOU TO JOIN HIM ON THE “BEACH” BEFOR HE IS “DEPARTED” FOR PUTTING SOME “MAN IN
THE IRON MASK”WIHT A COPY OF “WHATS EATING GILLBERT GRAPE”!!! WHO CARES IF THE HYP MACHINE WORKED? FAN BOYS NUMBERS ALONE WOULD HAVE PUT BUTTS IN THE SEATS FOR THE DARK ONE! THEN THE OLD GUYS WOULD HAVE HAD THERE LITTLE LOVERS WITH THEM SO BAT BOYS WOULD HAVE SOME NUMBERS THERE TOO! JUST A REMINDER THOUGH ACTION COMEDYS DONT DO SO HOT THE LAST ONE I PERSONALLY REMEMBER SEEING THAT WAS ANY GOOD WAS LAST ACTION HERO! BUT WHAT EVER THIS WILL ALL BE OVER SOON EVEN TITANIC (TITATIC FOR SHANETRAIN) SUNK!!! hahhaHaHahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

  9. The total budget of all four of those films was 145 million. The Dark Knights was 185 million. 495 million > 393 million. Apatow spent less and made more. I see your argument, but when one movie costs more than 4 and the 4 make more money than the one, the comparison is valid. If you want to bring in the other movie in the series, fine, let’s do that:

    All totals are combined:
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight: Budget - 290 million. Domestic Gross - 600 million
Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up, Superbad, and Step Brothers: Budget - 145 million. Domestic Gross - 495 million

The Batman Franchise has it beat by 105 million by spending double the amount on two movies. BUT:
    Batman: profit - 310 million
    Apatow/Rogan - 350 million

Hmmmm…. Something tells me Warner Bros. would be like “fuck batman” for an extra 40 million.

And the above point ONCE AGAIN trumps your niche market argument. You can make the argument that ANY movie is a niche movie, even Batman. The fact is, “Pineapple Express” IS a niche movie: the successful niche. History says so.

Now that that is taken care of, let me point out what you are missing about “The Mummy 3″. 1) It won the worldwide box office. 2) It’s quite obvious “The Dark Knight” is the bigger of the two movies. It was all along. That’s why they waited to release M3. 3) DK beating M3 by a million domestically proves that “The Dark Knight” is back down to earth. 4) The history of The Mummy franchise says that M3 isn’t done yet. The first one grossed 155 million, and the second 202 million. Overall, is it going to pull DK’s numbers? Hell no. BUT it’s gonna pull in the 20’s this week. Pineapple - probably about 30-33. Dark Knight, probably around 20. Therefore, M3 is a huge fucking factor. Most people have seen The Dark Knight already. They are either going to go with PE or M3, or Sisterhood 2. DK is done.

The hype machine created the backlash, which creates negative word of mouth, which significantly slows down the money. The hype machine argument is very much a part of the argument. The opinion part comes into play when you are picking sides.

Watch the fuck out for Sisterhood 2. It’s most certainly a factor. All the women that had to go to The Dark Knight against their will are going to play their cards this week. Plus, the actresses in it are way more popular now than when they were in the original.

I’m not saying that “The Dark Knight” hasn’t accomplished anything. I was highly impressed when it broke the ten day record in 6 days. My argument is that everything is aligned for Pineapple Express to win the box office, and that the lumps Dark Knight is going to take this week completely dead the “Titanic” chase.

  10. Ok Mattrix, i’ve never seen Titanic be it in the theater or on DVD, thank you. However Leo is a phenomenal actor. In regard to negative word of mouth? That is what exactly will kill The Mummy 3 as Rachel Weiss’ no return has dissappointed many a mummy fan and the negative word of mouth buzz has already hindered it (at least domestically). Batman is a niche movie as it is a comic book adatpation yes but these films w/ the exception of Blade are PG/PG-13 making them family oriented creating mass appeal thus creating a higher marketibility and making more money. As far as the budget in a movie in comparison to what it rakes in is not the argument here. (For that matter Halloween is still one of the hugest sleepers/box office upsetters in that regard). Regardless of the amount of money it takes to make the movie its still a matter of how many people put their butts in the seats to go watch it. So the examples given before in regard to Superbad etc dont matter. Blair Witch cost little too nothing and made a fortune but that doesnt say its a great movie in a sense. (even though i personally dug it!)

The Mummy killed its self w/ the “negative word of mouth sucicide tactic” The Pineapple as we will see this coming weekend surely is in the Express lane for defeat when challenging Batman.

As far as Sisterhood….HAHA to make the mere assumption that comic book fans cannot be female and that demograph were drug out and forced to watch the movie is a naive one. Comics cater to all. Furthermore, even if this were true I severly doubt the turn out on women having their men return the favor by going to see Sisterhood will be as great as the triumph of Batman.

The history as to whether or not Pineapple Express is a successful niche has yet to be written by the hands of box office booth clerks across the globe. If for any reason Seth’s latest effort dethrones Batman it will be because the movie is almost into a month of its run now and advent movie goers are ready for something new but despite this even I think Batman’s number 1 spot is secured.

Since this great debate has begun we have put Seth Rogan’s collective effort and The Mummy’s modest 3rd installment to the challenge of Batman and The Dark Knight still casts it ginormous shadow over these achievements. I predict The Pineapple Express will be sliced, diced, juiced, and served up as a mid-movie snack for the Batman audience. It will come and go and leave little mark on the box office and will re-surface on the DVD market w/ an unrated edition to please the same fans who saw it in the theatre. I want to see this movie myself but it will leave no stamp especially no where near the size of Batman now or years to come amongst great cinema!

  11. A) What do you mean it’s not part of the argument? The total gross of the new batman franchise (over three years) is comparable to the total gross of four movies (over two years). The new batman franchise cost double the amount and didn’t make a fuck ton more than the Apatow movies, which have been more profitable when you factor in budgets. When you factor in budgets, you can make the argument that when it comes to box office revenue, the Apatow camp crushes the Batman camp. Remove the budget factor (which is inane) and the box office numbers are STILL in the same ballpark. In addition, the Apatow/Rogan movies have been a box office fixture spanning two years. Fans don’t have to wait years. The point is: THE ROGAN/APATOW CAMP MAKES HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY. It’s a proven fact.

    B) The word of mouth I have heard was “it’s alright” not “it’s downright terrible”. And you still are failing to see that the numerous choices (three of which that are backed by strong box office history and one that suddenly has star power) is going to be the death of Dark Knight’s reign at the top. The worldwide grip died last weekend.

    C) Titanic held it’s grip on the number one spot for 17 weeks and gradually declined. The Dark Knight is losing 50 percent a week. It’s called THE SUMMER MOVIE SEASON. Shit doesn’t last long. Maybe they should have waited until Christmas if it was records they were after. Oh wait, that’s right, the new Harry Potter movie would have bent it the fuck over.

    D) You act as if I am claiming Pineapple Express would have beat it on it’s first weekend. I am not a fool. The argument isn’t which is going to make more money. It’s which is going to make more money this week, and whether or not “Titanic” is in jeopardy.

    E) People will forget about it when the next blockbuster comes around.

  12. HAHA! The movies budgets are not inane they are down right irrevelant. The point that one must pull out a directors whole arsenal to combat the success of one movie is in one word “Denial”.

What we are talking about here is the already achieved success of Batman and the speculation as to how much more of a run it has left. I believe it has an honest shot at Titanic’s 16 month (I think this is more accurate) run at number 1 where as you do not.

The Batman franchise was introduced here in response to the Seth Rogan flimography (your weapon of choice). Scratching both of these out and returning to the original fact at hand, Batman has thus far backed its hype and emerged victorious over TM3. The potential is certainly there for “The Great Pineapple” theory but again this is onlyl because it is strategically placed in the presumed aftermath of the dark one’s glory.

We both agree that if the two films debuted on the same weekend Batman would take home the gold. Since that has been established the argument should unravel itself. The Pineapple won’t run as long as Batman (If it evens hits number one which it may but not this weekend) and it certinly will not rake in the revenue of Batman either.

In regard to Titanic, for the first time in a long time a film emerges with the potential to rival the cinematic beast. It may or may not make history in such a manner (lets not forget about David and Goliath) but I personally believe based on it’s numbers that it can. Titanic was golden in the sense of its off-season release and lack of serious competition. The Dark Knight even though tickets cost more now than the days of the Titanic is still doing exceptionally well considering the films that it has been up against so far.

This coming weekend should be a challenging one for the caped crusader as there are a lot of “big name” releases hitting at once. Pineapple being the biggest named amongst the few still will fall short in my predictions. Sisterhood again, should not be a threat. If anything, if Batman’s crown is to be seized at all, it will be next weekend by Tropic Thunder.

Batman just has a lot going for it. It’s a huge license/franchise from the comic book days of old, it’s a star-studded film anthology, Heath Ledger pulls the ladies on looks and the average film fan w/ performance, great word of mouth until just recently, and so much more!

This weekend’s box office report will tell us if Batman is to be denied that coveted number one spot or not by the Pineapple so we shall have to wait and see…..

  13. Whole arsenal? I pulled four movies. AND THOSE FOUR MOVIES COST LESS THAN ONE BATMAN TO MAKE AND MADE COMPARABLE MONEY.

16 month or 16 week? And it’s actually 15, my fault. Here is the chart. For some reason they have weeks on there twice. Either way, it took over three months for titanic to fall off. Dark Knight has fallen 150% in three weeks. Where do you see “staying power” in those numbers?

Once again, I never said Pineapple Express would beat Dark Knight three weeks ago, I’m saying it’s going to beat it this week. Number two movies don’t make 200 mliion dollars. Therefore, no record.

I never once said that Pineapple Express would make Dark Knight numbers. I’ve simply argued that it has enough behind it to take down the Dark Knight from the top spot. It’s already done internationally.

Speaking of which Titanic made $1,842,879,955 domestic and international combined. That’s 1.2 billion internationally. The Dark Knight is sitting at $602,538,494 combined, $202,500,000 in the foreign market. That’s not even fucking close, and even worse considering The Dark Knight got bounced by The Mummy 3 worldwide.

  14. A PILOT YOU RACIST MOTHER FUCKER

  15. “IF” Pineapple takes the #1 spot from Batman it will ONLY be because of the amount of time the movie as has already spent sitting at #1 but that is a big “IF!” The movie has had an impressive run in the #1 spot regardless of of its revenue in comparison to Titanic or any of Seth’s movies. Number 1 is number 1 regardless and 2nd place is the first loser. Dark Knight has “batted” away its competition so far even in the midst of a revenue decline. We can debate all day but it still wont change the box office reports of the past 3 weeks lol and as for this weekend, again it may budge it may not. I see the attachment to the budget of the movies in question here and I ask myself “why?” I see the slated argument of Superbad and Knocked UP and I ask myself “why?” Opening weekend numbers or overall numbers the bat beats them both. Money taken to make the movie isn’t as important as money taken PERIOD! and the bat has taken more! For sake of discussion even if Pineapple takes number 1 this weekend it still proves nothing unless it stays at number 1 longer than Batman or unless it makes more money than Batman otherwise it only proves it was hotter for the weekend. It doesnt prove its a better movie or has more “staying power” it merely says Batman has been in the box office for a while now and the magority has already seen it and wants to see something new. A very meak win for the Pineapple but a win none the less but it holds no substance. Its like scratching a lottery ticket. To make an educated guess as to which movie will take number 1 away from Batman after almost a month in release! It could be any movie at any time…..but I still back the bat and its potential to go after Titanic.

  16. Yeah but I could care less how much money I gross on my paycheck, it’s the amount that ends up in my bank account that I care about.

  17. Touche’ Dr. Monkey, but none the less Batman is still filling more seats than the other movies so more people are going to see it more than the competition and thats what has been keeping it at number 1. The revenue may not be as much in comparison to the amount it took to make the movie but its still enough take the #1 spot for 3 consecutive weeks thus far.

  18. What do you mean it proves nothing? The whole argument started because I said Pineapple Express would take the top spot THIS WEEK. The last three weeks are irrelevant in that argument. They ARE however relevant in the Titanic argument because they have dropped 50% every week, something Titanic most certainly did NOT do.

  19. Jesus Christ.

  20. Yes yes my friend and if in deed it takes number one it does not prove it is a better movie but only the audience wants to see somthing new lol number 1 in number 1 however so i’ll give it that if it takes it but though there is a decline sales over the course of the past 3 weeks it does not knock it out of the potential to go over titantics record.

  21. @wendell

yea and you thought i’d be here in the mix up!

  22. i will say this much, the dark knight has been only out for 18 days– movies tend to stick for 3 months or more depending on their popularity– besides tropic thunder and pineapple express — the latter by the way i see as making money at first but then quickly dropping– either way those 2 movies are really it’s competition unless im missing something– now that being said, who said dark knight can’t reach 600 million or even 500 with only 18 days in and about 85 days or more to go.

  23. All im saying is not one of the many movies mentioned here could go toe to toe debuting on the same weekend as batman and win. Batman would dominate them all. TM3 tried to step up and got sat down. Pineapple may find itself fallen a far way away from its tree loss somewhere in a much emptier theater than batman. Or the pineapple may find itself nested high up above in its palm tree over looking boxoffice as its competitions numbers fall to the beach to be washed away…..but the ladder of the 2 here is doubtful.

  24. I agree w/ ya Black. Batman is right in line to catch Titanic. most pineapple fans will be too stoned to make it to the show and as far as tropic thunder….the initial buzz of RD JR. being black will fill some seats but they will empty out just as quickly. Lets face it, Batman is like Moses about to part the cinematic sea and i walk right by his competition putting him one step closer to claiming the crown from titantic.

  25. That means Batman must make at least 22 million every week for the next 9 weeks

Batman won’t make 22 million the week of the 15th for sure and honestly is in serious danger of barely making that this week

It’s a good movie, and a money making machine, neither point I’ll argue but will it take down Titanic, nope.

  26. Thank you, Justin. And Shane, the topic of quality hasn’t been broached. I’ll tell you this: I’ll like “Pineapple Express” better than “The Dark Knight” barring a sudden drop in quality from Rogan/Apatow. “The Dark Knight” was a bit too tedious. Heath Ledger’s performance, while good, wasn’t legendary and is only amplified by the fact that he passed away. That being said, I am a huge fan of the Rogan/Apatow crew, so I am biased. I am willing to admit that. But the Batman series lost me with this one a bit because somehow someway a movie with a clown villain managed to take itself too seriously. I absolutely guarantee that one thing “Pineapple Express” will NOT do is come off as pretentious.

But that is besides the point, we weren’t talking about our opinions of the film, we are talking numbers. As Justin pointed out, 22 million a week for 9 weeks is not going to happen. It’ll hang out around twenty for a couple of weeks (if not only one) and drop after that. 530 million tops.

To say it is “in line with Titanic” is to ignore the numbers. Titanic was #1 and pulled anywhere from 30 million to the high teens every weekend for 15 weeks. The Dark Knight is losing 50% every weekend, and now has 4 legit moneymakers to fight for viewers. You can’t argue that because The Mummy pulled 40 million and is a successful franchise (and killed Dark Knight internationally), Step Brothers is at $60 million, Pineapple Express is a Rogan/Apatow movie with Rogan in his prime and a team with a history of box office gold, and Sisterhood 2 has the attention of the younger females. Not to mention Mamma Mia keeps making money every week (a quiet 87 million in three weeks), and Tropic Thunder and the fucking Star Wars cartoon come into play next week. Too many wide releases, not enough screens. The lack of space alone will cut into The Dark Knight. Where do you see 22 million for 9 weeks in that equation?

All of the records it’s breaking are impressive, but they are all instant gratification records (opening weekend, best ten day total in 6 days, 400 million in 18 days). It also had nothing but Mamma Mia to fight for 14 of those days. It barely won the battle with the Mummy. It has no fucking staying power at all.

  27. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/m.....itanic.htm

get your goddamn facts straight, it didn’t pull 30 million a weekend and these are numbers batman did EARLY on — trust me– BATMAN might take down the titanic.

  28. btw that movie was out for PRACTICALLY A YEAR people, that was the biggest pile of bullshit– this movie has half or less than that time to make up the money– and it’s fucking doing it–

so i don’t know what magic crystal ball your viewing, but i will fucking tell you to quit lying as to what it made and in what time frame cause i can look it up just as easily…

    GET YOUR FUCKING FACTS STRAIGHT….

    bitches.

  29. Wow dude, you can’t read:

What I said: “Titanic was #1 and pulled anywhere from 30 million to the high teens every weekend for 15 weeks.”

Your link was to the daily’s douche. Here are the WEEKEND numbers that I linked to before: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/m.....itanic.htm

The first fifteen weeks it was released: all number 1, highest $36,014,544, lowest $15,213,500

    GET YOUR FUCKING FACTS STRAIGHT

  30. YOU GUYS NEED ALIFE WHO CARES ABOUT THE NUMBERS YOU SHOULD ONLY CARE IF THE MOVIE IS GOOD OR NOT

  31. Numbers games are fun. It’s already established that The Dark Knight is good, I’m not denying that one bit. But I feel it’s underrated and about to bottom out, whereas they think it’s the 2008 Citizen Kane and is going to shatter all records.

  32. Well I will say this winston. Dark Knight lost if for you in the Batman series?? How about Joel Schumaker lost the Batman series w/ Batman and Robin. A movie w/ a clown as the villian taking itself seriously? CAn we say Stephen King’s “IT” Fucking Classic! You are right this is not a matter of opinion as much as it is a battle of numbers and thus far Batman has been winning the numbers battle in the box office. I am not biast to Batman as this movie brought it back for me as far as the series goes. You admitted your bias for Seth’s movies. that i think is a factor here. Batman does in fact have the potential to catch Titantic. 20 some million for the next 9 weeks is doable even if there are other good movies out there. Just because people may want to check out the new weekend release does not mean they may not want to catch up and see Batman for the first time or for the 2nd or 3rd for that matter. TM3 didnt do it fair and square so that argument is dead. The potentials for this weekend are yet to be known. I will tell you this, Pinapple is Seth’s last movie for a while. He wrote it when he was 15 much like the rest of his movies and is fresh out of ideas so this one better be good to reassure his mainstay and interest by the fans. But back to the point at hand, Heath Ledger’s performance was phenomenal and it’s not credited as much for him passing away as much as you are discrediting it in the assumption that it had everything to do w/ his passing. Lets not forgot ummmm he gave that performance before he died and people are just aknowledgding a great thing when they see it. If Seth Rogan died tomorrow im sure you would slate the pineapple as his greatest effort thus far…..The movie is great, the film itself is not oscar worthy but i strongly believe Heath’s performance was. Its making money and alot of it and though maybe not probable it is certainly possible to see the Titantic record sunk by the end of its run.

  33. Oh and Titatic only broke 30 million 5 times in the weekend run. Its success also had a lot to do w/ an increase in screens to help accomadate the fan buzz. Other than than it was mid teens to mid 20’s for numbers for the remaining 10 weekends w/ a couple of exceptions where it spiked back at around 28 million. Not to mention DK’s first 3 weeks crushed the sales of Titantic so that gives it some lead way….the only hinderance i see here is that if it may have peaked too quickly but whos to say…..20 some million for the next 9 weeks is do-able. There shouldn’t be a whole lot of blockbusters left until the thanksgiving movie season begins….everything else is coming out are fan films meaning if you dont already have an interst you’re not going to have an interest and i’m sorry but Sisterhood 2 isn’t going to go anywhere HAHA

  34. overrated ya jerk!

  35. Hey Winston Sisterhood 2 is getting worse reveiws than the first one (which can hardly even be classified as a mid-level hit) i know the stars have gotten bigger now since the 1st film but outside of teenage girls i dont think it has a market. Cant say that i believe just yet that the pineapple will override DK either….i’m thinkin as i wrote on a post in Monkeys reveiw i’m estimating somewhere around low 40 mill mark for the weekend box office report….i was wandering though and tell me honestly b/c im not sure how this works but you think there is any chance of a DK re-release later this year to help put it in the runnin for the Oscar race?? It broke another record beating out Shrek 2 for the 400 million mark and is close to becoming the highest attended Batman movie from the franchise. Unfortunately it did not beat Spiderman for highest grossing 3rd weekend though…its def a record setter! i gotta say i’m curious to see how this will all turn out man…bout 195 million to go and its got the titanic! damn thats impressive….i’m worried bout the damn cartoon star wars movie though lol

  36. OK JUST PUT THE PROTRACTOR DOWN AND STEP AWAY FROM THE CALCULATER!! THE NUMBERS ARE ONLY GOING TO GET YOU IN TRUBLE!! STICK TO THE OPINIONS YOU ARE WELL KNOWN FOR! NOT THE INFINANT LEIGONS OF THE COUNTLESS COUNTED, THE ETERNAL MULTITUDE, THEY ARE THE WAY TO THE LIGHT AND ARE YOUR DEMISE!!! NOT TO MENTION THAT THE FINAL NUMBERS IS ALL THAT MATTER NOT WHAT YOU PREDICT!! YOUR NOT STEVEN HAWKINGS OK!!!!!

  37. Hey i got money riding on this thing dude! i will crunch numbers like the count on sesame street if i have too! that and i’m tired of knowing Titanic holds the record! I havent even seen it and i can tell you it sux!

  38. DROPPING PLATES ON YOUR ASS!

  39. The robust start for “Pineapple Express,” an action comedy about a couple of dope-smoking slackers caught up in a drug murder, puts the film on track to snap the three-week reign of “The Dark Knight” at the top of the U.S.-Canadian box office.

It also marks the third successful August launch for producer Judd Apatow, the filmmaker behind last year’s “Superbad” and 2005’s “40 Year Old Virgin.” Those two also carried an R rating — under 17 not admitted without a parent — but opened on a Friday.

    Just for the record btw

    http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/new.....41800.html

That’s the link if you care to read the whole story

  40. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! LOL

  41. Well considering it’s currently ahead of Batman by 7 million and hasn’t even had it’s big Friday/Saturday crowd, I think it’s a no brainer.

  42. Hell Batman needs to be more concerned about getting out of the #3 spot this week where it is currently sitting.

Never under estimate the power of the chick flick

  43. They are having the same conversation over at moviepoopshoot.com.

  44. Yeah but this may not be a big weekend for anything considering the Olympic opening ceremony is on which is why they all came out on wednesday. sisterhood will be 5th or 6th this weekend.

  45. You are going to be wrong sir.

  46. Hey Mike, YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS THE BALL LICKER!!!!! :)

Anyway, Shane, come on? The fucking Olympics? Nobody gives a shit about the Olympics except octogenarians and the athletes themselves. IF they were a factor, they would steal from The Dark Knight too.

Sounds like you are grasping. I am going to talk so much shit if The Dark Knight loses to Pineapple Express AND Sisterhood 2.

  47. The shit talk can commence early for all i care lol i’m not worried bout it….DK is still going to take Titanics record regardless of what happens this weekend. People do watch the olympics and it will be a factor to all those teenage girls whos parents wont take them to see SOTTP2 b/c they want to stay home watch that shit and they wont allow their lil girls 21 year old out of high school boyfriends with a license take them lol so we shall see…..Pineapple was great movie i seen it last night and loved it but the weekend hasnt come and gone yet so we shall see…..even if DK beats the competition for #1 this weekend fucking Star Wars is going to take it any how. thats a 300 million plus making movie for sure!

  48. I dunno about all that. It’s a fan boy cartoon.

But all I have to say is… prepare to suck the cock of karma.

  49. there will be no sucking of the dick of karma or of any likeliness thereof for that matter!

  50. I don’t know the Star Wars film is going to be in more theaters than any film coming out next week plus it’s fucking Star Wars so it’s gonna pull it’s weight for sure.

  51. not with all the negative reactions from even the fandom– kids will probably make this movie.

  52. WHAT FUCKING CARTOON ANIMATED SHIT FOR STARGEEKS ARE YOU DOLTS TALKING ABOUT?!?!!!! I just dont know any more, i think the money and the karma threw me off i thought this was about numbers not animation. I guess even the weather factored in this weekend? You guys do need the count to count your crazy asses off into the abyss of eternal numbers!! ONE HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

  53. I’m not completely sure but uhhhh did anyone else check out the weekends box office numbers??? lol

  54. 4 oij sdft ihjl dfgl’sdfgjdfs gasd’gaiagaweig~~!!!!!

  55. Fucking wednesday openers… Dreamworks panicked and released “Tropic Thunder” tonight, so The Dark Knight will probably make 13 million this weekend and still get number one.

Then again “The Clone Wars” has fanboy power. Long live the Trekkie.

  56. Wait… wrong series. Oops. Eh, fuck em all.

  57. you baw like a wittle girl.

  58. i smell 5 weekends in a row for DK man! oh its glorious! lol

  59. Not a chance. It’s gonna make 13 million this weekend. Clone Battles or whatever the fuck it’s called got that shit this weekend.

  60. probably so….but one can hope….hopefully the force is not strong w/ this one!!! lol although a cartoon lightsaber weilding Yoda is pretty fucking cool!!!!!!!!
