From the director of Talladega Nights Adam McKay comes a new comedy that pairs up Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly for a second round. This time instead of on again off again friends/feuding race car drivers the duo play Dale and Brennen two middle-aged men unable to grow up following the divorce of their parents. Now Dale’s dad and Brennen’s mom are slated are newly wed and Dale and Brennen are Step Brothers.

The movie is what you’ve come to expect from Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in their recent comedic roles. Of course with the latest in flux of R rated comedies (thank you Judd Apatow) you get a lot more bang for you buck that you wouldn’t get in a PG-13 comedy. Call me childish if you want but you can never have too many “f-bombs” in a film and the cast of Step Brothers were dropping them like World War III. The film never really attempts to get mushy it’s just sheer insanity as the brothers go from hating each other, to loving each other, to having to assume the lives of grown-ups; which is one of the primary reasons these films work. You come to laugh, nobody is here to learn a life lesson.
Of course in addition to foul language you get sight gags such as Brennen tea-bagging Dale’s beloved drum set in which had to be the most shocking scene in the movie, showing that clearly Apatow has really rubbed off on the guys. You also get an unbelievable amount of quotable lines as usual.

When all is said and done Step Brothers is just another case of the guys doing what they do. If you loved Talladega Nights and Dewey Cox, then you’ll enjoy Step Brothers. If you hated both the films than you’ll hate Step Brothers as well.
Here’s the priceless music video the brothers make called “Boats N Hoes”
