Emerging out of the ashes of the now defunct Dog Fashion Disco comes Polkadot Cadaver the new band featuring members of Dog Fashion Disco including the singer Todd Smith.

The album kicks off with the sound of sleigh bells as the slow Haunted Holiday plays confusing the listener as to what they should expect from this band, that is of course if you aren’t familiar with the history of it’s members. By the time the piano ridden almost polka sounding A Wolf in Jesus Skin kicks in she have figured out that you are in for one of the strangest yet catchy albums that you’ll have the pleasure of hearing.

Polkadot Cadaver takes elements of the more obscure Mike Patton projects and mixes it with the best elements of Dog Fashion Disco and the Alter Boys creating a sound that is very unique and at the same time very entrancing.

Musically the album is all over the place; polka, dance, rock, and borderline industrial at times. Throw in small hints of jazz and you might have a better idea of where this album goes. Perhaps the most compelling thing about the disc though is it’s ability to take so many styles yet remain so catchy.

That is one thing that can be said with all of Todd’s projects, he has a knack for combing off the wall lyrics and crazy music but somehow giving it a catchy, almost mainstream appeal that allows for a wide crossover audience.

When I first heard the news of Dog Fashion Disco disbanding I found it very unfortunate, if for nothing else than because of all the momentum they had picked up recently and having just released what in my opinion is there best album in “Adultery.”

However, Polkadot Cadaver does not fail to satisfy those who were fans of DFD and will hopefully continue to put out great albums.
